RESEARCH GRANT APPLICATION

Eligibility Criteria

The applicant must be the principal investigator and an active AEIRS member for two consecutive years, including the year of application. The research must focus on some facet of imaging or radiologic sciences education or practice and the project must be for a period not to exceed one year. The Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson of the Research Grant Committee are not eligible to apply for a grant. One grant will be awarded annually not to exceed $3,000.

Submission Guidelines

The supporting documents listed below must be submitted electronically on this form by April 1, 2025. The submission must include:

  • the completed application;
  • a cover letter requesting funding listing the names and institutional affiliations of all investigators;
  • a description of the research project (see final question of application);
  • the vitae of all investigators;
  • documentation from all other sources of funding for the project; and
  • if funds are being requested for communication of results, an acceptance letter for presentation of the results of the research project.

Place the documents in the order listed above. Name the file “Research Grant – Last Name”. All supporting documentation must be combined and submitted as a single PDF file to be considered. The AEIRS office will acknowledge receipt of the file. The Research Grant Committee will not consider applications that do not 1) address all submission guidelines and 2) include all required documents.

Recipient Requirements

The recipient is encouraged to attend the 2025 AEIRS annual meeting to accept this award. The recipient must agree:

  • to obtain the necessary approval of appropriate boards/committees at their institution and submit proof of final IRB approval to AEIRS office prior to receiving funds;
  • to submit a mid-point report six months following notification of funding;
  • to submit a final report within 12 months of notification of funding;
  • to submit a report of their findings including a photograph to the AEIRS Radiologic Science and Education journal, or Spectrum magazine and/or submit an application to present the findings at a subsequent AEIRS Annual Meeting within 12 months of project completion;
  • to use funds as specified in the application;
  • to submit requests for changes in funding to the Board of Directors and receive approval prior to expenditure of fund and
  • to return all unused funds at the completion of the project.

If funding is awarded, the recipient will receive an agreement including these stipulations that must be signed and returned to the AEIRS office prior to disbursement of funds.

DESCRIPTION OF RESEARCH PROJECT

Complete a narrative, using the headings below as a format to describe the research for which you are requesting funding. The description of the research project (sections I-V below) should be no longer than six pages. This part of the application will serve as the primary description of your research project and it will be reviewed and rated by the research committee. All ratings will be averaged and awards will be based on a ranking of the highest means and available funding.

I. Introduction, Statement of Problem, and Hypothesis

Formulate a clear, concise, and manageable research problem and hypothesis avoiding technical jargon. Communicate the importance of the problem and hypothesis, what contributions you expect to make and how the problem and hypothesis fit into the broader context of current problems or questions in the radiologic sciences. Avoid making assumptions or unsupported claims or statements. The significance of the problem and hypothesis should be addressed: that is, does it:

  1. explore an important question;
  2. meet a recognized need; or
  3. make a useful contribution to the radiologic sciences?

Citations from the literature should support and promote the significance of the problem and hypothesis.

NOTE:  The context of the introduction and the statement of the problem and hypothesis must be related to the Statement of Purpose and the specific research questions or hypotheses in the following section.

II. Statement of Purpose

In one or two clear, concise statements indicate the overall purpose of the research project. The statement of the purpose should clearly indicate the overall intent of the research project followed by the hypothesis and specific research questions.

III. Methodology

Include information regarding the type and design of the research (quantitative, qualitative, mixed methods, experimental or non-experimental, ethnographic or analytical, descriptive or historical). Indicate the subjects, measuring instruments, data collection methods and analyses, and procedures to conduct your research. The methodology should be explained in sufficient detail for the grant application reviewers to comprehend the techniques used in conducting the research.

IV. Budget

Indicate the total funds being requested and describe how the funds will be used. Funds can only be requested for communication of results if an acceptance letter for presentation of the results is submitted with the application. If the funds requested represent only a portion of the total cost of the project, please indicate this and provide an estimate of the total cost of the project. Please also provide documentation from all other funding sources. If all other support has not already been committed, please provide the approximate date of the other funding decision(s).

V. Communication of Results

Indicate how the results of the research will be communicated to the imaging and radiologic science community, if funded.
