Call for Entries - 2023/24 Local Community Art Exhibit at Black Phlox

Dear Artist,

Black Phlox is proud to invite you to participate in the Fall 2023/24 Local Community Art Exhibit. We're celebrating our local talent and providing an opportunity for artists like yourself to gain exposure and recognition within our community.

Every Ninety (90) days, ten outstanding submissions will be handpicked by the community from all entries received and showcased in our studio for a Sixty (60) day term. If you are eighteen (18) years of age or older, we encourage you to submit your work.   There is no registration fee and if an entry sells Artists will receive one hundred percent (100%) of the proceeds from the sale.  Black Phlox realizes that artists bring so much fulfillment to our lives, and we are happy to provide a space where that can be realized.   It's that simple, and yes this is real!

Exhibit Terms for 2023/24 season will go as follows:

Term 1: October 1 - December 31, 2023

Term 2:  January 8 - March 31, 2024

Term 3:   April 8 -  June 30, 2024

Term 4:   July 8 - September 30, 2024

Submissions for 2023/24 will be open throughout the year, but in order to set the order for our first terms we will be temporarily closing submissions at midnight on August 31st.  Entries for the following terms (Term 5+) may continue to apply on September 1.   Following this, a community voting process will run from September 1st to September 22nd to select the first ten featured pieces for Term 1, and the order for the following terms of the 2023/24 year. You'll be notified on the 23rd of September of your term. As we move closer to the Grand Exhibition for each term, we will hold a virtual meeting with our first round of artists to answer any questions they may have,  line up criteria, and clearly outline some essential details regarding the handling and security of the artworks:

Upon selection, Artists for Term 1 will have from October 1st to October 9th to bring in their entry into the Black Phlox Candle Co. for mounting.

Participating Artists must agree to the following terms & conditions:

Follow:  Artists who are participating in the exhibit must follow Black Phlox Candle Co on Social Media to help us build public support and awareness for the event.

Like and Share:  We encourage you to share posts surrounding your event directly from the Black Phlox Instagram or Facebook accounts with friends and family to bring them in on the voting process and raise awareness for Grand Exhibit dates!  In order to vote you have to follow us on our social media.

It is the full & unequivocal responsibility of the artist or assigned representative to maintain all enhancements, handling, mounting, display, delivery, retrieval, payment, or details therein.

Submissions must be retrieved from Black Phlox Candle Company studios no later than seven (7) calendar days after respective assigned term has ended.  Submissions not retrieved after 14 calendar days after item has not sold or term has ended may be donated or discarded at the sole discretion of Black Phlox Candle Co without regard to items delivery or condition.

Black Phlox's Stance:  Please be aware that Black Phlox Candle Co takes no responsibility for the handling, security, or any potential damages to the artwork during this process. Our role is to provide an ongoing platform for local talent, but the ownership and care of the artworks remain with the individual artists.

The first grand exhibition of the chosen pieces will be held on October 12th, a day to truly celebrate local artistry.  We require that all of the featured artists in this term attend the event, it will be a great way to build community, garner exposure, and network as well!

Sales

In the application below we ask Artists if they have a preferred payment method and working URL so that the entirety of the sale is handled straight through the Artist.   Artists are required to notify Black Phlox as soon as an item sells both during their showcase or before it so that we can make adjustments accordingly.

Artists who are not local to the area are welcome.  If you cannot physically be present at the Grand Exhibit of your term or to mount, deliver, or retrieve your art you will need to register a representative who will be 100% responsible for your work and obligations during your term.

This event has restricted mediums —we welcome paintings, photographs, drawings, etc.  But it has to be securely mounted by you and fit in a space of 36 x 40.  If you've been waiting for an opportunity to share your creativity with Houston, this is it!

This is more than just an exhibit, it's an avenue for our local artists to interact with their audience, network, garner exposure, translate their perceptions, and truly resonate with the spirit of our community.

We're excited to witness the varied artistic expression this event will unfurl and are eagerly looking forward to what you have to showcase. Let's make this a memorable journey of creativity and community spirit!

Best regards,

Rica and Tasha Kendrick Palmer
